Katonga Game Reserve - Uganda

Game reserve of Katonga covers an area of 207 sq. km of savanna, acacia woodlands and a large area of wetlands. Within the reserve live around 40 mammals species and 150 different kinds of birds but the main attraction is without any doubt, the presence of the shy sitatunga, a semi-aquatic antelope that lives exclusively in swamp areas, here relatively easy to see.

The riverine forest adjacent to the canal that crosses the papyrus swamps, the only wetlands canal in East Africa, harbours a community of black and white colobus monkeys. Among the mammals species there are buffaloes, hippos, warthogs, waterbucks.

Within the Katonga reserve there are many trails: Kyeibale trail, Kisharara trail and the Sitatunga trail.

Surrounding the Katonga reserve live the Banyankore people famous for breeding the long horned Ankole cattle.
